OnRoad/OffRoad Safety Motorcycle Face Shields and Eye Protection

As you hop on your Harley-Davidson, Honda or Yahama and take to the open road, it is wise to invest in several pieces of protection. A cycle ride without some of sort of eye and face protection is pretty risky. What is a rider to do when he or she take a pounding from the elements, such as wind, dirt, rain, and dust? Without something to shield the face, such as a face shield or pair of glasses, insects and other nasty debris can obstruct his or her view.

Today, when it comes to choosing shields or a helmet for your motor ride, there are numerous options on the market to choose from. Different styles, colors and designs await a rider, whether they enjoy a motorcycle ride on the adult or junior level. Before choosing a face shield or helmet for your motorcycle gear collection, keep in mind that a helmet with a plastic face shield is one of the best choices you can make. This is because this type of support will protect the entire face. Sometimes motorcycles come with windshields and in this case, a pair of goggles may be best.

When selecting eye protection, you should choose a pair of glasses or goggles that offers a clear view on both sides. The product should be shatterproof, as well as possess an item that is free of scratches. Proper sealing should be taken into consideration so that wind does not cause watering of the eyes. For full-face coverage, there should be strong chin support and absorbing liners. Below are a few brands to keep in mind when you need to protect yourself on and off the busy road.

Scorpion

When it comes to trend setting protective motorcycle gear, some of the best-designed helmets in the world come from Scorpion. From all over the world, motorcycle lovers are using Scorpion helmets. Some of the helpful features that these helmets offer include the EverClear no-fog face shield, which also provides an anti-scratch hardened coating. Scorpion helmets also use a KwikWick moisture-absorbing liner and cheek pads. The convenience also extends to a product that is breathable and can be easily washed.

Nolan

Nolan helmets offer motorcycle riders top-notch protection through its Lexan face shield with desirable UV 400 Protection. With the Vision Protection System (VPS), there is a convenient clear shield, which offers three different positions. There is even extra neck roll to further reduce the effects of wind and noise. For those who suffer from allergic reactions and tend to experience irritation with some of the materials used to construct a helmet, a Nolan option provides an interior with anti-microbial hypoallergenic sanitation.

Vega

Offering nine different convenient face shield colors and sizes, Vega helmets are a great way to fashionable take to the road. The full-face Vega helmet option provides tons of loaded features. The superb construction and materials used to make this great item offers fully vented capabilities in the chin, rear and top areas of the helmet.

When looking for adult sizes, you may choose from XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXL. Junior sizes are offered in S, M and L. When selecting a helmet, the size hat that you wear is an important determining factor. If you wear a size 7-5/8 - 7-3/4 in hat, then you will need an XL motorcycle helmet.

Additional Motorcycle Protection

There are many different protection items that a motorcycle rider may choose. Fulmer provides riders with full-face, open face, half and off-road helmet selections. AGV is another popular helmet brand that is used in many different professional bike-riding tournaments. It must be something about their clear and tinted visors that makes riding both fashionable and safe.

Benefit From Buying A Used Harley

Buying a used Harley from a secondhand dealership is not as cool as buying a brand-new ride. It is definitely much cooler. Not to pull your chain or anything, but used Harleys are the bomb. However, few people have the sense to believe and actually practice this when buying their big boy rides. There are definitely some good things about buying a used Harley and you can benefit from knowing these the next time you purchase a new ride.

An advantage in buying a used Harley is the assurance that used Harleys for resale are well-kept and cared for by their previous owners. Possession and ownership of a Harley can be considered as luxury and a status symbol. For this reason, it can be expected that most Harley owners would even spend more money in the maintenance of a Harley than in its purchase.

Although Harleys reign on the road and are more popular than their other counterparts, they are still machines. Like all machines, Harleys depreciate in value. A buyer of a used Harley would pay only half or even less of the cost the former owner paid for the bike when it was bought brand-new. This holds true even if the bike is only a year old — what more if it is two years old or more?

Aside from the lower costs compared to a new bike, used Harleys also offer big savings in terms of modifications and performance improvement. Think about this — rarely do riders leave their Harleys in their original state. They add accessories and update motorcycle parts to improve the quality of their ride. These add-ons also cost serious cash with prices ranging from a few hundred dollars to thousands. Fortunately, these add-ons are not easily removed without a major overhaul. Why fortunate? This means that a used Harley is sold with all the additions and added features intact. A buyer is entitled to a savings of a thousand dollars or more in accessories by purchasing a used bike.

An aesthetic improvement like changing the seats or using chrome parts alone can rack up to a several hundred bucks — topnotch quality would even entail a thousand dollar tag minus the labor involved in the process. By buying a used Harley, you save on the price of the bike and rack up savings on the accessories and labor fees.

Likewise, performance improvement modifications like updating ignitions or cams or carburetors cost just as much or even more. Unlike accessorizing, performance improvement is an investment which the most discerning or riders take seriously. Most of the time, the beauty and power of a modified Harley is more than that of the original. Thus, by buying a used Harley, you get a prime-quality ride for the fraction of the cost of a new bike and the modifications combined. Now, that’s what you call one sweet ride.

Used Harley or not, there is really no way other people can tell. Used or not, a Harley is still a Harley and no one could contest this. Since there is really no visible difference, there is only one way to determine which is the best Harley — by the size of its rider’s wallet. Definitely, with all these savings, the owner of the used Harley wins.

Why Do Bikers Dress The Way They Do?

March 8th, 2009 at 12:15am Under Motorcycles

Digg me

Most motorcycle riders wear leather lots of leather. Boots, chaps, vests, gloves, chain wallets, and leather jackets. The reason behind all this leather is not for looks, and it’s not to appear threatening. It’s all about protection!

There is protection from weather provided by leather. Riding in cool weather gets very cold when you are moving at 55 miles per hour. Even the gentle Florida winter requires protection from winter weather. In fact, I would never know that was Becki getting ready to ride the Toy Run if I didn’t recognize the motorcycle! Weather isn’t the only issue, however.

True bikers dress to protect themselves in a fall rather than dressing just for the ride. Accidents do happen. You may have to drop a bike to avoid being hit by a car. You may experience a front blow out and lose control. It is possible that even the most experienced rider can drop a bike. I’ve had to CHOOSE to drop a bike to avoid being run over by a car. The bike and I both survived. I didn’t even get road rash since I was wearing leather! I also chose where to drop the bike so it wasn’t damaged except for a paint ding.

Bikers learn from experience, both theirs and others. When you see someone who chose to ride in shorts and tee-shirt come in covered with road rash, you know that riding that way is not wise. They dressed for the summer ride and failed to dress for the fall which happened.

That explains the leather jackets and chaps. But why the chain wallets? Motorcycles vibrate somewhat. You climb on and off them. This places stress on the back pocket where a wallet would be carried. Over time, the wallet can drop out unnoticed and not only is money lost, but ID, proof of insurance, credit cards lots of valuable things that take time and trouble to replace. With the chain wallet, this cannot happen. You also do not expose yourself to having a pick-pocket hit you during a crowded motorcycle event!

The leather gloves often fingerless for summer wear — make holding handlebars for hours more comfortable. There isn’t a cruise control on a motorcycle, although some people rig them up. The throttle is in your hand and you have it turned to the speed you want to go for the entire ride. That wears on the palm and tires the hand. The gloves provide comfort. Mesh and leather are normally used for summer riding, full leather for winter rides. Also, the hands are provided protection from the road in case of a skid, fall, or drop. Road rash on the palms HURTS!

Goggles or eye protection is often the law, but it also makes sense. Think what happens if a bug hits you in the eye at 55 mph! Of course, the goggles or eye protection needs to look cool, but that just because no one wants to wear funny looking glasses. Helmet visors provide the protection in states where helmets are required. A benefit of visors, if you use a full-face visor, bugs don’t get in your mouth either! ICK!

Speaking of bugs: leather protects the rider from insect impacts as well. Do you realize how hard a bug is when it hits your body at high speed?? It’s painful!! And no one would want that angry insect to sting if it were capable.

Boots are a necessity. If you almost drop a bike, often that sturdy boot placed on the ground prevents the potential drop becoming a real accident. Think how your foot would look if you had to steady yourself and your bike wearing thin bottom sneakers? If you ruin a pair of boots because you saved yourself from a fall, it’s an investment that paid off! Boots also provide protection from hot exhaust pipes and support the ankles better for mounting and dismounting your ride.

Where helmets are not required, leather skull caps are popular. Sometimes called a do-rag, these leather bandana-like objects are shaped for the head and tie in the back. This hold hear in place but also provides some protection should you scrape your head during a fall. Of course, if you HIT your head during a fall, only a helmet will provide protection. However, we should let those who ride decide, but most states feel otherwise!

There is a reason for every thing the biker wears. Sure, it looks cool in their opinion, and there is some really beautiful riding gear available. But it’s not all about looks. What you wear when you ride can save your life or at least your skin!

Some Great Tips To Help You Choose The Right Motorcycle

March 8th, 2009 at 12:15am Under Motorcycles

When you’re getting ready to buy a new bike you have to think about what kind of riding you want to do, how much money you’re willing to spend, and how dependable the motorcycle is that you’re thinking of purchasing. It’s also a good idea to take some special courses about riding a motor bike, if you’ve never done so before, and to get a special endorsement on your license saying that you have that training.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or an experienced rider, you still probably have a lot to learn and going to a course can do you a lot of good. Another advantage is that you might get a reduced rate on insurance if youve been to one of these courses. In Ohio, the classes are required and it is not legal to operate a motorcycle without the special classification on your license. Check the list of organizations at the end of this article for information about where to take classes.

If you haven’t had that much experience, according to one large dealer, it is a good idea to get a smaller bike. They are easier to maintain, and less likely to be seriously damaged in the event of a fall or a minor collision. Large, faster bikes have larger displacement engines and design that emphasize speed over durability in the case of a small collision, so they are not advisable for new riders. For example if you drop a small bike it might cost fifty bucks to fix, but one of the bigger bikes would run you several hundred dollars to fix if the same thing happens.

For those of you with a few years experience under your belt who want to step up to the next level of motorcycling, buy a motorcycle that suits your needs. Do you want to ride on a track, on dirt, or on the open road? How much are you looking to spend? What kind of payments are you able to afford after paying maintenance, gas and insurance? There’s most likely going to be a loan agent right there at the dealership that can set you up with a loan. Get approved for a loan and you’ll be able to figure out what kind of motorcycle you can afford

Check in the Internet, magazines, and the dealership and ask your friends what they can tell you about prices and quality of within your range. Find out what kind of report the bikes you like are getting from people who ride them every day. Ask around and make sure to get several opinions. It never hurts to hear what other people think.

Compare the benefits of buying new compared to buying a used cycle. New bikes come with a warranty, and old ones may have hidden problems that you can’t see before you have ridden them for a while. The advantage, of course, is price.

Is it better to buy a motorcycle from a dealer or from an individual? You can get a good one at a good price from an individual if you’re lucky. The advantage of buying from a dealer is that the dealer has a reputation at stake and would not want to sell you a dud. There’s a lot to think about. If you’re a good mechanic you would be less scared of finding a few problems in the engine, and you might be willing to take a chance. If you don’t know much about fixing bikes you might want to play it safe.

In the end it’s up to you. Just think it out and be careful to make the right decision.

How To Avoid Some Of The Biggest Mistakes When Looking For A Motorcycle Loan

March 8th, 2009 at 12:15am Under Motorcycles

When you’re buying a motorcycle you need to know about bikes, but you also need to know about how to buy a bike, and that has nothing to do with engines and manufacturing. One important detail where a lot of people that purchase motorcycles go wrong is getting the right loan.

How much the loan agent is willing to loan you is a good way to figure out what kind of bike you can afford to buy. Prices vary a lot between different models, and at the beginning of the year when new models come out they are generally more expensive than at the end of the year when dealers are trying to get rid of old inventory to make space for the next year’s models. But through all this one thing remains constant, and that is the fact that if you don’t have the cash, you’re going to need a loan. Don’t fall for the tricks. Remember that you have alternatives to purchasing a loan from the dealer. Don’t get caught up in the pressure to buy a bike and forget that this deal is really all about money. You can go to the bank, the Internet, or to a credit union and apply for a loan, so don’t let anyone push you around.

The best thing you can do is shop around before you even go into the bike shop, so that you go in there knowing what you’re working with. You are now in a position to fight for the best price, but if you don’t know what your options are then you have to take the word of the person who is trying to sell you a loan. That is never a good idea.

There are many mistakes that people commonly make, and the person who gives you the loan is apt to make a lot of money off people who don’t do their homework before signing on that dotted line. Here are some things to think about:

Be careful about reading the fine print. If there is a special low interest rate for a short period of time, but then the rate increases to a much higher rate (as with many credit cards) it is not advisable to take that deal unless you are surely able to pay off the loan before the high rate kicks in.

If you can’t, it is probably a better idea to opt for a different kind of loan, even if you end up paying a higher interest rate. You don’t want to get caught with that inflated interest rate at the end of the promotional period.

Another thing is to remember your budget. Don’t borrow more than you can afford to borrow just so that you can have a shiny bike. Remember youre going to have to buy gas, insurance and pay for maintenance, and you have a life to live than involves other expenses as well.

Make sure you know what you’re signing. There are a lot of loopholes that a layman misses the first time he reads a technical legal document, and lenders use these loopholes to get you to pay more than what you planned for. What is the time period of the term? Is the interest rate fixed, and if so is it permanently fixed? If not, when can it change and for what reasons? Does it have to be full coverage? What are the registration fees, and what other fees are there? Is there a late payment penalty? Does late payment affect the interest rate? Does the program use simple interest or the rule of 78?

Remember, what you don’t know can really hurt your pocket and affect your way of life. It is worth the effort to do the extra research before going out there and buying a bike.

The power-assisted braking system provided in the Chrysler Crossfire is befitting to the performance level of the Chrysler. Undoubtedly, brakes and brake assistant system are important factor of a racing car like Crossfire. The brakes and brake assist system in the Chrysler Crossfire is appropriate for a racing car and also has set yardstick for others in the motor industry.

Following are some of the salient features of brake assist system used in the Chrysler Crossfire. The brake system of the crossfire has large diameter ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The system is backed up by the highly sophisticated electronic wizards of Brake Assist System and ANS anti-lock.

The front brakes of crossfire have ventilated discs of 300 X 28 mm measure with single piston floating calipers. The rear brake discs of crossfire measures 278 X 9mm. These rear discs have opposed-piston calipers. When any set of front pads becomes worn the wear sensors fitted in the system illuminate dashboard warning light. The power assistance is provided through tandem master cylinder and single=diaphragm vacuum booster.

The Chrysler Crossfire has state of the art ABS consisting of four-channel, four wheel anti-lock of standard quality. This brake system is considered most suiting for the crossfire.

When a driver applies heavy brakes, specifically on slippery surface, the system gets activated and applies and releases the brakes at high rate. The optimum brake applies and release rate is 30 times per second. Despite the higher rate of brake applying and release the system prevents wheel lock up and helps the driver in retaining steering control.

The Brake Assist System fitted in the Chrysler Crossfire anticipates the emergency application of brake by the driver and immediately releases optimum available power boost to help the driver gain control over the car without loosing steering control. The driver may have usual human tendency of not braking hard or not breaking soon enough. The Brake Assist System overcomes these problems.

Like other features of the Chrysler Crossfire, its brakes and brake assist system is reliable. The system is of high standard quality technology and produces excellent performance even in adverse conditions.

Helmets Why Do You Need It When Riding?

March 8th, 2009 at 12:15am Under Motorcycles

Helmet is a French derivative of the word helm from 15th century. Although helmets are available in countless designs for different utilities, they all serve just one purpose, which is head protection. The earlier helmets used to be manufactured in leather till the 10th century AD when metals with inner cloth lining for cushioning and comfort of wearing on the head became the norm. Helmet wearing is mandatory in northern America, barring a few states, for all bikers, whereas Sikhs are demanding a waiver from this mandate.

Functional Utility and Symbolism
Till the early 20th century, helmets were basically the protective head gears of soldiers and used to be a part of combat uniform. With industrialization, helmets reinvented themselves and undergone a lot of changes, both in terms of strengths and weights and became a must wear for certain industrial workers in sectors such as mining, construction and manufacturing etc. Surely, the popularity of helmets shot-up, thanks to the symbolic protection they offered.

Typical Classification
Helmets can be classified based on their utility and construction. The simplest for of helmets worn by construction workers and bicycle riders are nothing more than hard hats as they are required to protect blunt impacts, whereas a soldiers helmets are designed for ballistic impact protection. These are made by Kevlar, which has excellent bullet proofing qualities and fragmentation powers.

Helmets match particular needs also. Military helmets identify the ranks of the wearers with symbolic visors and bars therein, whereas hard hats of bicycle riders sport large ventilation slots.

Quality Standards
Bikers and parents of small children are in dilemma concerning the sudden fall in childrens helmet prices. One must keep in mind that price is not a good quality indicator. In the US, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requires all helmets be certified. The certification is issued after stringent quality tests are carried out. There is another quality standard for helmets, too. Snell Memorial Foundation standards or Snells as they are known are a bit extra stringent, albeit not compulsory by all types of helmet manufacturers to conform to. This fact should try to put at rest the apprehensions of consumers when they dont see Snells label on helmets.

It is hard to think of a modern and adventurous sport without helmets being mandatory. Although helmets arent absolutely safe, you cant think of cross country biking without them, especially if the riders are your little ones, helmets are a must!

Happy Birthday Harley Davidson 100 Years of Harley Davidson

March 8th, 2009 at 12:15am Under Motorcycles

Digg me

One Hundred years is quite a milestone for anything to reach. One that the finest motorcycle company on the planet has deservedly attained.

To think that it all humbly started with a couple fellows’ dream of creating a motorized bicycle. It was a shaky start when young William Harley and Arthur Davidson first began. Early models still used manpower to make it up hills. But that never stopped this determined duo from testing, tweaking, changing and finally succeeding to create a motorcycle that still is popular today.

The first Harley Davidson motorcycle was created in 1903 with a single cylinder, three horsepower motor. In 1906, Harley Davidson manufactured the first 50 motorcyles bearing their name. The V-twins that would make the young company a household name came out about 1909. 1912 brought out the Free Wheel Control which was one of the industries first clutch system.

Today’s distinct rumble is one of the few sounds, other than copywritten and contract material, that has been the subject of litigation. Listening to the strength of a Harley Davidson engine is one of those things that sends shivers up the spines of the true believers.

The Choppers, we love so, were born when the angle of the motorcycle’s front fork was further extended letting the handlebars to sit further back. Hogs were named for the extra room used to transport racing pigs without switching to a larger vehicle.

No other motorcycles or choppers have inspired the fan following that can produce the massive bike events of Daytona, Sturgis, Myrtle Beach or Laconia. Not to mention the hundreds of smaller sponsored rides and events. Literally hundreds of thousands of motorcycle riders and fans surge to these communities annually for week long events. Sponsors and vendors will set up shop in mall parking lots and event centers to show off their wares. From T-shirts to custom bikes, choppers and trikes line the streets, making the areas a photographers’ heaven! Feel free to take a look at the bikes of Myrtle Beach, at CustomChopperGarage.Com

In 1983, H.O.G., The Harley Owners Group, formed its first chapter. Today more than 1,000 chapters are in existence and more than one million members share their love of these bikes, whether owners or fans. The devotion to these classic bikes is proven, and you do not have to be among the elite to enjoy all there is to Harley Davidson.

Owning a Harley Davidson can be a life’s dream for some. They are not an inexpensive purchase for sure, but some things are simply worth the higher price tag, plain and simple. If you are the lucky owner of a Harley, you know the love and care that is given to that member of the family.
